Band Festival – November 2, 2018

Upcoming Festival!  November 2, 2018

Guest Conductor – Ms. Joni Sutton

Joni Sutton is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where she earned a bachelor’s degree  in Music Education and an MA in Music.  She began her teaching career in Upsala, Minnesota, where she taught band grades 5 -12 for fourteen years.  In 1992 Joni moved to the Twin Cities to work in the Osseo Area School District.  She taught in that district for 19 years, including teaching seventh and eighth grade bands and eighth and ninth grade jazz ensembles at Maple Grove Junior High School for fourteen of those years, where she was also Music Department Chair.  She retired from teaching in the spring of 2011.

Joni Sutton became a member of the Minnesota Band Directors Association (MBDA) Board of Directors in 1992.  She served as MBDA President from 2001-2003 and was on the MBDA Executive Board for six years.  While on the board, she designed and hosted the first MBDA Beginning Band Festival in 2003.  She has been a percussion section coach for MBDA Honor Bands, has conducted MBDA Regional and State Honor Bands, and enjoys adjudicating at solo and ensemble festivals as well as large group festivals.  In 2011 Joni worked with MBDA to create a mentorship program for new band directors in Minnesota.  Experienced “master” band directors are paired with less experienced directors, creating an opportunity for new directors to ask questions and brainstorm in a non-judgmental format.  Joni continues to coordinate this program as well as being a mentor herself.

Ms. Sutton continues to perform as a percussionist and has presented clinic sessions at the Minnesota Music Educators Mid-Winter Clinic.  She is on the Board of Directors for the Plymouth Civic League and also volunteers extensively at her church in Plymouth.  She and her husband are state tour coordinators of the Minnesota Ambassadors of Music, an organization that takes select high school band and choir students from Minnesota on a concert tour of Europe every two years.  She loves to travel, but when forced to return home from a trip she resides in Plymouth with her husband, Chip Williams.
